Compass: China’s military awaits new satellites

Peter J Brown argues in ATOL that the emergence of China’s global navigation system, Compass, and the larger PLA-controlled space architecture is critical if China intends to challenge the U.S. by constructing competing strategic networks on Earth. The article includes a detailed consideration of SATNAV hacking as a cyberwar variant in Beijing’s arsenal. I’ve been monitoring China’s negotiations to join the EU’s sat nav system, Galileo, since 2003. Brown’s article includes updates, particularly on the signal interference issue. ATOL’s coverage of the emergence of competing Sat Nav constellations is comprehensive:

  • Why the US is unhappy with China
  • China draws Africa into its orbit
  • Europe’s great leap outward.
…the GNSS revolution is well underway. China is deploying Compass quickly and is quite confident that it is heading in the right direction.
